Since 1952, MIFF has been bringing breakthrough independent films to Melbourne in a world-class program of premieres and events. The festival has presented films by the great auteurs of the world alongside thrilling new talents – all while supporting local filmmakers and celebrating Australia’s cinematic stories.

We’re working hard to ensure that our program, our industry projects and our only-at-MIFF events build on the incredible legacy of the festival.
The last few years have been extremely challenging. Producing a festival is expensive and risky, and our financial model relies on six weeks of box office income to survive. We’re trying to keep ticket prices low, while venue, travel and production costs have seen sharp increases. We may be recovering from our COVID years, but audiences have changed and many are still finding their way back to events like ours.
