McDULL, THE ALUMNI

Director Leung Chun, 'Samson' Chiu / / Hong Kong

Working life and the mores of contemporary Hong Kong get a healthy serving of absurdity in the third instalment of the animated McDull series. The first two McDull films - My Life as McDull (MIFF 2003) and McDull, Prince de la Bun (MIFF 2005) - purported to tell the story of an under-achieving cartoon pig attending Flower of the Spring Field Kindergarten, but in reality, they served as a launching pad to lampoon various aspects of Hong Kong society.

McDull, The Alumni is no exception, although this time the world of work is the target of the film's humour. While the cartoon students of the kindergarten discuss their career aspirations and imagine what their futures holds, live action sequences - featuring cinematographer Christopher Doyle and a plethora of Asian star cameos - show the irrationality of ‘adult' working life. Strewn among the screwball antics are reflections on the monotony of office work and the vanishing of childhood dreams.
