HUMAN RESOURCES

Ressources Humaines

Director Laurent Cantet / 1999 / France

Human Resources is an award-winning debut feature from Laurent Cantet which mixes politics and pathos to create a cogent human drama. Franck is a recent business school graduate who returns to his hometown to take up a position in a factory where his father has worked for the past 30 years. Embraced by management, but dismissed by members of the workers' union, Franck slowly eschews the conservative executive ranks as he discovers his efforts are serving to diminish the numbers of workers—including his father.

Perceptive in its observations of everyday life, Cantet has crafted a richly nuanced emotional canvas, which deals intelligently and truthfully with father-son, worker-employer and class conflicts. Pure in its themes and naturalistic in its approach, Human Resources is an emotionally rewarding film.

"Human Resources is a small masterpiece of social realism that easily stands comparison with the best of Ken Loach."—Screen International
